16th Meeting of the IOBC-WPRS Working Group "INTEGRATED CONTROL IN PROTECTED CROPS, MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE"
2-5 September 2025, Podgorica, Montenegro

HOST TOWN - PODGORICA

As Montenegro's capital and largest city, Podgorica serves as the nation's administrative, cultural, and economic hub. Strategically situated at the confluence of five rivers - Morača, Zeta, Ribnica, Cijevna, and Sitnica - and surrounded by three lakes, including the expansive Lake Skadar, Podgorica offers a wealth of opportunities for half-day or full-day escapes.

Septembers in Podgorica are particularly pleasant as the summer heat subsides. The city has an abundance of green areas and parks in the centre of town and along the Morača River, providing a refreshing escape for visitors. In the evenings, local cafes, pubs, and restaurants come alive with a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere, offering the perfect setting to enjoy Montenegrin cuisine, local wines, and the city's laid-back charm. Whether strolling through the lively streets, taking in a sunset by the river, or unwinding in an open-air café, visitors can experience the welcoming spirit of Podgorica at its finest.

Podgorica has a rich historical and cultural heritage. Just outside the city, the remnants of the ancient Roman city of Doclea and the Ottoman-era old town of Stara Varoš, close to the centre, provide glimpses into its past. The contemporary town features modern architecture alongside historic landmarks such as the Millennium Bridge and the striking Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. Museums and galleries offer insights into Montenegrin history and art, while local markets and cafes showcase the country’s warm hospitality.

The city's gastronomy combines national and Mediterranean cuisine, complemented by a varied selection of local wines. Podgorica is also a hub for cultural, theatrical, cinematic, and sports events, as well as international festivals, providing a vibrant atmosphere for visitors.

Due to its central location, Podgorica is an excellent base for exploring Montenegro. In under an hour, visitors can reach the historical town of Cetinje or Lake Skadar, a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers; the Adriatic coast is an hour's drive away, and the scenic mountains are nearby. Excursions to the Ostrog Monastery, the historic town of Cetinje, Boka Bay and Budva, or the dramatic landscapes of Durmitor National Park make for unforgettable experiences.

So, Podgorica is not just a meeting place but a gateway to discovering Montenegro’s diverse landscapes and cultural heritage. We encourage attendees to take advantage of their time in the capital by exploring its historic sites, enjoying its lively café culture, or embarking on excursions to nearby attractions.
