Fashinada is a unique and traditional event that takes place in Montenegro, specifically in the Bay of Kotor, near the town of Perast.
This centuries-old tradition is a blend of maritime culture, religious practice, and community spirit, celebrated annually on July 22nd.
Fashinada dates back to 1452, when, according to local legend, the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela) was created by local fishermen. After finding an icon of the Virgin Mary on a rock in the sea, they began to drop stones at the spot to create an artificial islet. The dropping of stones symbolizes the collective effort to preserve the islet, and by extension, the community's heritage and faith.
The event is deeply rooted in the local community, with participation from all age groups. It's a time of gathering and celebration, where tradition is passed down to younger generations.
The central part of the celebration is a procession of boats. Local residents decorate their boats with flowers and set out into the Bay of Kotor. They row to the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks, where they drop stones into the sea to reinforce the foundation of the islet.
Over time, Fashinada has also become a tourist attraction, drawing visitors who are interested in experiencing Montenegrin culture and the stunning scenery of the Bay of Kotor.
